REPOROA COLLEGE

Contacting School – A Guide for Parents (2012)

Do you want to talk to someone about your child?

  • A concern about their school work?
  • A concern of a more general nature?
  • A concern you feel someone at school should know about?

Please contact us if you have any concerns – if we do not know about your concerns we cannot help to sort them out.

Who do you contact?

We suggest that you always start with the student's form teacher.  In many cases they will be able to answer your questions straight away.  If necessary they will either find out further information for you or pass you onto the person who can resolve the matter for you.

Parents of Senior students may also contact Carey Henderson who has responsibility for Careers or Mrs Kathy Gordon who looks after Gateway (both particularly relevant in the senior school).

Please phone in your child's absences!  Phone (07) 333 8117 and press 1 to get through to Mrs Amanda Griffin in the Wellness Centre.  Again, if you cannot reach Amanda directly please leave a message on her answer phone.  This answer phone is checked regularly throughout the day.

The school needs to be notified of absences before 10:30am.

Other staff that can help:

  • Senior Leadership Team – Mrs Jane Goss (Student Manager), Mrs Sara Field (Assistant Principal in charge of Hillary house), Mr Steven Hughes (Assistant Principal in charge of Lovelock house).
  • Principal Mr Kris Bhatt.
  • Guidance Counsellor – Mrs Malou Bromley.

How do you contact these people?

Ring the school office (07)333 8117 and ask to speak to the particular staff member, OR leave a message for the staff member to ring you, OR pop into the school office and arrange a time to meet with the staff member, if that person is not immediately available.  If you can't get through please leave a message on the answer phone, that way we can ensure your message gets followed up.

Please note that often it is easiest for a staff member to phone you. They are usually teaching all day and will not have a chance to talk with you when you phone the school.

If you leave a message, or someone says they will get back to you and they don't, then something has happened – they've forgotten, been away, been trying to get hold of someone or something else first etc…! Please try again, or try someone else from the list.  Not getting back to you is never intentional, but occasionally a reminder is needed.

What's the best approach?

We always welcome phone calls that start "My son/daughter came home saying…" happened. Can you tell me (or find out for me) what actually happened?"

Although some students lie, the majority do not.  What tends to happen is they leave out bits of the story – the bits they know will upset you.  Sometimes they have a different take on an incident from other people involved.

It always pays to hear the other side of the story or fill in the missing details before you get upset or worried. Often incidents or problems can be resolved much more easily than you imagined they would be, particularly when you have the full picture.

Once again …

Please contact us if you are concerned, worried, or have questions and need answers.  Good, strong connections between school and home will always get the best possible results for our students – your children.
